Book of Fables – Chapter 39: Film Noir

January 14th, 2011 § 22 comments § permalink

Hmm, I’ve always wanted to do a look like this~ Complete with hair and makeup, now all I need is the correct setting and dress :) You’ll notice the background is a tad different, I’ve moved my “studio” equipment (aka two cheap lamps and foam core reflector) into a separate room (yay I can walk around in my bedroom again!) which unfortunately has next to no white walls nor natural light :/ So I’m going to have to start figuring out ways to simulate the wonderful white walls I have in my bedroom :( No,  worries, it’ll figure something out, one thing I love about photography ;)

In the meant time enjoy, and I included a quick tutorial on how to style my hair :D Hope it helps!

Face
MAC Prep + Prime
NARS Sheer Glow Foundation – Gobi
Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer – Beige
NARS Loose Powder – Flesh

Cheeks
Nude by Nature Cheek Bone Highlighter – Virgin Blush
NYX Mosaic Powder – Highlighter
NARS Powder Bronzer – Laguna

Eyes
Too Faced Shadow Insurance
Coastal Scents 88 Metal Mania Palette
Rimmel Quad Eye Shadow – Smokey Noir
Prestige Eyeliner – White
MAC Fluidline Blacktrack
L’Oreal Extra-Volume Collagene – Noir
Shu Uemura Eye Lash Curler
DUO Lash Glue
False Lashes

Lips
Savvy by DB Lipliner – Cosmos
YSL Lip Twin

Face
Prime your face, apply your foundation and conceal any discolouration. Set with a face powder.

Cheeks
Apply a bronze to the hollows of your cheeks, then a matte burgundy rose coloured blush to the apples of your cheeks. Use a matte highlighter to your cheekbones. We’re trying to contour our face to sharpen the look.

Eyes
Prime your lids, then using a white eyeliner pencil, colour in the inner corner of your eyes, brow bone and blend. Take a white shimmery eye shadow and apply over the white eyeliner. Next take a medium to light red-copper-ish eye shadow and apply all over the lids, extended into the crease. Take some of this colour on to the lower lash line. Take a medium to dark burgundy eye shadow and apply into the crease, blend towards the brow bone and wing it out.

Next take a black eye shadow and blend into the outer corner of your eyes. Blend the colours to ensure there are no harsh lines, but make sure that the gradient effect is still obvious. Next take the black eye shadow and fill in your eyebrows lightly. Then take the same eye shadow and line your upper lash line. Don’t need to be 100% accurate, we want to smoke it out just a bit.

Take a gel black liner and go over the black eye shadow with a more intense and precise line. Curl your lashes and apply two coats of mascara. Finally apply false eye lashes.

Lips
Line your lips with a dark red lip liner and fill in. Then take an intense red lipstick and go over the liner with a lip brush.

Hair
Easier than it seems! Give yourself a side part (use a clip if needed) then curl your hair with a curling iron. Once done, take each curl and roll it back up towards your hair and pin. Do this with the rest of your hair to complete the look.

Book of Fables – Chapter 32: Fairy Floss

November 26th, 2010 § 16 comments § permalink

I did this look because I love fairy floss…. no seriously, that’s pretty much all there was to it!

Apologises if this is pink overkill, but my mum thinks it’s cool… not really, but I don’t have much to say about this look except check out my lashes! :9 Sometimes it’s fun to just grab a bunch of of stuff, and throw it together.

Ingredients

MAC Prep and Prime
Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation SPF 15 PA+ – Sand
Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer – Beige
MAC Mineralise Skinfinish Natural – Light
NARS Powder Blush – Orgasm
NARS Bronzer – Laguna

NARS Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base
L’Oreal Extra-Volume Collagene – Black
Milani Crystal Eyez – Beautifully Brilliant
Red Earth – Body Makeup Glitter – Silver
Coastal Scents Matte 88 Palette

Savvy by DB Lip Liner – Tulip
Maybelline Color Sensational – Pink Peony
Dior Kiss Lip Gloss Berry Smoothie

Method

Face
Prime, foundation, conceal and powder. Follow these 4 rules and I promise you as close to flawless skin as possible!

Cheeks
Pink blush to the apples of your cheeks and then bronzer to the hollows. Dig deep into the bronzer, concentrating closer to your hair line.

Dab glitter gel on the high points of your cheeks, just below your eyes followed with some silver cosmetic grade glitter.

Eyes
Conceal your brows, then pat on a hot pink powder.

Prime the eyes, apply a shimmering light pink on the brow bone, lid and inner corner of your eye. Extend the light pink just a bit more under your lower lash line. Apply a hot pink powder to your crease and to the rest of your lower lash line. Use a dark pink to the outer corner of your eye. Pat on some glitter gel all over your lid, followed with the same silver cosmetic grade glitter. Don’t be too heavy, we want a light application.

Curl and apply mascara to your lashes. Apply false lashes of your choice :D Something fun and festive!

Lips
Line your lips, apply lipstick and then gloss.

Book of Fables – Chapter 30: Kerrigan

November 12th, 2010 § 7 comments § permalink

This is my Kerrigan look, my failed look I was talking about earlier on twitter, because this looks nothing like Kerrigan. But with the support of Toby I decided to post it anyways.

For those who don’t know, Kerrigan, otherwise known as the Queen of Blades is the main villain in my latest gaming obsession Star Craft 2. She was originally part of the Terran army, betrayed by her fellow man and then left to become infected and rule the Zerg race. I absolutely love her character design, if I was daring enough to appear naked, I’d totally cosplay her~

One thing I did really love about this look is how different it appears depending on the lighting. See below in one shot when taken at twilight, I look like a muddy forest nymph! Yet, when taken with candlelight, I look completely different :D

Hope you enjoy the look, it sure took me a long time to put together~

Ingredients

MAC Prep + Prime
MAC Pigment Emerald Green
NYX Ultra Pearl Mania – Black Pearl
NYX Ultra Pearl Mania – Lime Pearl
NYX Eye/Eyebrow Pencil Medium Brown

NARS Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base
NYX Jumbo Eyeshadow Pencil Black Bean
Coastal Scents 88 Ultra Shimmer Palette
NYX Triple Eyeshadow Tropical / Yellow / Lime Green
Rimmel Quad Eye Shadow – Smokey Noir

Rimmel Soft Kohl Jet Black
Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-on Eye Pencil Zero
L’oreal Extra-Volume Collagene Black

NYX Lipliner Pencil Black Berry
NYX Jumbo Lip Pencil Narcisse

Recipe

Face
Prime your entire face, dark green pigment (I mixed a green pigment with a black pigment). Buff the dark green all over the face, focusing stronger pigmentation to hollows of your cheeks, temples and any place you want to create shadows. Use a lighter green pigment as a highlight, use on your forehead, cheekbones, bridge of your nose and chin.

Using a brown pencil liner, simulate the look of veins over your cheeks, chin and forehead.

Eyes
I used light gray contacts for this look. Next prime the eyes, then line and cover the lids with a black cream shadow. Using some left over dark green pigment, apply this to your crease to create a smoky look. Then take a black eye shadow to the outer corner of your eye, flick it out for a cat eye effect.

Under your eyes, simulate “dark circles” with a berry like eye shadow. Then just under the berry colour apply a yellow shadow. This is suppose to emphasise tired, drained, dark circles to a more extreme level. Make sure to blend out any harsh lines, but avoid over blending as we don’t want muddy colours.

With a black pencil eye liner, use a heavy hand to line your eyes and smudge it out. After smudging, it will be worth lining them again. We want a very heavy dark black appearance around the eyes. Be sure to line your waterline as well for the full impact. Don’t be afraid to be messy with it, we want a smudgy drained wrecked look :)

Curl your lashes and cover them with black mascara.

Using a black eyeliner, colour in your brow and extend them to create a high arch. Go heavy with the liner, no need to be subtle here!

Lips
Line your lips with a black lip liner, then apply a berry red colour to the lips. Blend it into the black liner for a “gothic” effect.

Lookbook #27 – Hard Candy

October 22nd, 2010 § 12 comments § permalink

My candy and 70-80s rock star inspired look~ Been making good use of my glitter collection lately :) Some things I wish I had done better was stronger pigmentation and done a better job of drawing that star on my face, I used a stencil and it still looks rather dull :( I also found using a spritz of water or MAC Fix+ to be much better glitter adhesive, as opposed to using clear lip gloss as it feels lighter and allows my skin to breathe more. Enjoy!

The hair price I’m using was provided by Headline Hairpieces from the Melbourne Beauty Bloggers Event! I think I need to get some blue ones eventually, it would make a killer look :D

Steps to reproduce:

Face
As always, prime your face with MAC Prep + Prime. Apply MAC Mineralise Satinfinish SPF15 Foundation in NC20 all over the face, conceal with Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer in Beige and set with NARS Loose Powder in Flesh.

Cheeks
Standard cheeks with NARS Bronzer in Laguna to contour, NARS Powder Blush in Orgasm for the apples and NARS Highlighter in Albatross to highlight.

Eyes
Prime lids and both lash lines with NARS Smudge Proof Eyeshadow base. From the Coastal Scents 88 Ultra Shimmer Palette, apply a light pink all over the lid, inner corner of your eye and brow bone, and a hot pink into and above the crease and under your lower lash line. On the right side of your face, extend the hot pink all the way to your temple, shape till desired and blend! Take NYX Ultra Pearl Mania in True Purple Pearl to your crease. Next place a stencil of a star (or any shape you want) to your cheek bone and colour one side with the hot pink, and another with the purple pigment.

Use MAC Powerpoint Eye Pencil in Engraved to line your lash and water line. Fill and shape your brows with a medium to dark brown colour from the 88 palette. Next, hold your bottle of MAC Fix+ opposite your right temple about 20-30cms away and spray all over your eye makeup. Quickly (before the Fix+ dries) dab Coastal Scent Glitter Powder in Pinky, near the outer corner of your eye and out towards your temple. Do a second spray with your Fix+ and apply NYX Glitter Mania in Crystal over the pink glitter.

Curl your lashes, apply two coats of L’Oreal Extra Volume Collagene in Black and glue on your false lashes.

Lips
For the lips apply MAC Pro Longwear Lipcreme in Goes and Goes, then apply MAC Dazzle Lipstick in Troublemaker on your “inner” lips for added dimension.

Lookbook #24 – Mermaid

October 1st, 2010 § 8 comments § permalink

So as you know from yesterday’s post, today’s look book is very special! Unfortunately I haven’t received all the photos taken that day, so you can look forward to a 2nd post involving some props later on.

This is the first lookbook I’ve had photographed not only by pro photographers, but with some awesome stylists as well! Making sure my hair was perfect, making sure my pose was right on etc. I’m not sure I can ever go back to doing my 1 person lookbook again lol. Well at least not happily, I’ve been thoroughly spoilt!

I went with a mermaid look, something I’ve always wanted to try~ Creating a mermaid costume has been a dream of mine, but knowing how conservative I am, it’ll be one I probably won’t realise hehe. So this look book is as close as I can get :) I hope you guys enjoy the photos! See steps to recreate below.

Oh and it should be noted, this look lasted over 10 hrs without smudging at all! It’s all in the primer baby since my skin is naturally oily.

Photo credit goes to Neil Creek, Elias Lopez and Hayden Pratt. Elias and Sam still have a couple more photos to post-process, so I’ll be sure to upload those for you guys once I get them :)

Steps to reproduce:

Face
Make sure you have a clean face, and apply MAC’s Prep and Prime all over the face. One pump is all you need. Once done, apply about 2-3 pumps of Giorgio Armani’s Luminous Silk Foundation in 4, I recommend using a foundation brush for this. I always feel like brushes cause less drag, and seem cleaner than using my fingers (though I’m not scared to use my fingers when I need to!)

Apply Bobbi Brown’s Creamy Concealer in Beige under your eyes, side of your nose and where you can find any redness or imperfections (I was breaking out for this shoot so concealer became my best friend :( ) Dust Bobbi Brown’s Sheer Finish Loose Powder in Pale Yellow lightly over the concealer.

Next with a puff, pat on Giorgio Armani’s Micro-Fil Loose Powder in 1. Don’t be afraid to be a little generous with the powder as I’m sure some will fall off when we get to our next step.

Cheeks
Apply NARS’ Laguna Bronzer into the hollows of your cheek, we want the apples of your cheek to really pop for this look. Tap out some NYX Ultra Mania Pearl in Yellow Pearl on to a mixing plate, and with a powder brush dust it all over your forehead, making a “V” like shape. Then dust some on your temples, cheeks, jaw line and don’t forget your neck and upper chest too, or anywhere you want your “scales” to appear.

Next is the tricky part, find a cheap pair of fish net stockings and cut it to seperate the legs. Then, put one leg over your head so that the netting overs your entire face. Go slow with this part, we don’t want to drag our foundation too much, but at the same time we want the netting to sit tight on our face so it doesn’t move.

Fun time! Tap out some Turquoise Pearl and apply it over the same areas you applied the yellow. Only this time, not as liberally. You need to make sure the yellow is still showing, so only apply within the yellow areas, staying clear of the edges. To make sure the colour is pigmented enough I sprayed some MAC Fix+ into my mixing plate. It helped intensify the colours a great deal.

Next apply Ocean Blue Pearl over the top of the Turquoise Pearl, don’t cover it 100%, but pat on enough to give it a “blue glow”. Hmm… it’s times like this I wish I did video tutorials as well, it would make it so much easier to explain if I could show you… would anyone even watch them? lol okay, back on topic!

Finally before removing the stocking, apply NYX’s Glitter Mania in Crystal all over the pigments used, be generous! We want that “just out of the ocean” fresh, sparkle look!

Take off the stockings and see how awesome the scales look! Do exactly the same as above for your neck as well.

Now we need more glitter! Seriously, I was a walking disco ball that day and the glitter still wasn’t as strong enough in some photos! When it comes to make up for photo shoots, use a heavy hand. I applied Milani Crystal Eyez in Gorgeous & Glowing with my fingers on my forehead, apples of my cheeks, neck and collar bone. Glitter makes this look!

And if that wasn’t enough, using DUO eyelash glue, I applied 3 small crystals just under my left eye.

Eyes
Apply NARS Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base all over the lids and under your lower lashes. Put on as little as possible to have good coverage without leaving your eyes feeling “damp”.

Next using my Coastal Scent 88 Ultra Shimmer Palette, apply a yellow colour all over the lid. Next use a medium blue colour and apply it just above the crease, make sure to wing it out. Add a bit of the blue under our lower lash line. Then use a aqua / green colour and apply it directly into the crease. Finally use a dark blue colour and apply it to the outer corner of your eye, make sure the colour is saturated, having these different shades really adds definition to the eyes, which your eyes certainly need to stand out with against all the crazy vibrant scales on your face. Then use MAC Pigment in Vanilla in the inner corner of your eyes and brow bone.

Next, line your upper lash line with MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack. Wing it out ever so slightly, we don’t want a vampy look. I always prefer using pencil liners for my waterline, so here I used Savvy by DB Luxury Liner in Shimmering Slate. This stuff doesn’t budge, love it!

I unfortunately forgot to bring my mascara to the shoot :( But I did have my eye lash curler and false lashes, so after curling my eye lashes, apply false lashes and then I used my fluidline mixed in with some MAC Fix+ to try and combine my own lashes with the false lashes.

Lastly fill in your brows with any brow pencil you have, or use eye shadow! It works just the same :)

Lips
I stained my lips with YSL Rouge Volupte in 15, then applied MAC Lipglass in Flurry of Fun on top for added sparkle.

Hair
I curled my own hair, but my lovely Sefie is responsible for pinning it up for the photos :)

Lookbook #23 – Red Vamp

Fables in Fashion Fables in Fashion

Even though I’ve sketched out many a lookbook there are some evenings after work that all I want to do is chill out and basically… muck around! This is the result, not nearly as “crazy” as I normally get, I didn’t want to scare you guys with some of the… ‘creations’ I end up with? hehe

My favourite part is the blush, you’ll see it clearer in some photos, it’s a sharp cut down using nothing more than sticky tape ;) I’m starting to think sticky tape is now one of my beauty essentials!

Fables in Fashion

How to reproduce:
Face
Apply NARS’ Sheer Flow Foundation in Gobi all over the face, and lighten any shadows with Yves Saint Laurent’s Touche Eclat. Then seal everything with NARS’ Loose Powder in Flesh.

Cheeks
Using two pieces of tape, place them diagonally starting from the side of your lips all the way up to your ear. The angle can be adjusted to whatever you want. Then using MAC’s Powder Blush in Apple Red start from just below your temples and work your way down. You want the most colour saturation to remain closer to your ear and fade out as the tape reaches your lips. Next apply Canmake Highlighter to the apples of your cheeks for an added pop, as well as bridge of your nose, chin and forehead.

Eyes
Apply NARS’ Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base (my new official favourite primer!) all over the lid.

Then using colours from Coastal Scent’s 88 Ultra Shimmer palette, apply a pink colour just above the crease and purple colour into your crease. Then with a black shadow, apply it into the outer corner of your eye. Finally apply a medium blue colour over your entire lid, and make sure everything is well blended. Each colour should fade into each other seamlessly. Apply a white shimmering shadow to the inner corner of your eye and brow bone. Then apply some of the purple under your lower lashes.

Line your upper and lower lashes with MAC’s Fluidline Blacktrack, be sure to wing out your liner. Curl your lashes and apply two coats of L’Oreal’s Extra Volume Collagene in Black.

Lips
Apply NYX’s Lipstick in Snow White all over your lips and coat with Dior’s Addict Plastic Gloss in 854.

Lookbook #22 – Pigtails

September 17th, 2010 § 4 comments § permalink

Fables in Fashion Fables in Fashion

Pigtails! That’s the main theme for this look at least, not that you can see them in most of the photos :) I’ve never been huge at styling hair (the most I do is curl or straighten, nothing fancy), so I’m determined to throw that into my repertoire as well. I didn’t use ANY product for my hair in these photos, hence the frizz. Though I did that on purpose because I was going to bed after this shoot and didn’t want to have to wash my hair when I took a shower hehe

Check out the crystals on my lashes, got these from the many drug stores in Japan :)

Fables in Fashion

How to reproduce:

Face
Apply one pump of MAC Prep & Prime all over the face, then with a foundation brush apply NARS’ Sheer Glow Foundation in Gobi (eep, this shade is a touch too light for me!). To give myself a flawless look, I decided instead of regular powder, I’d use NARS’ Powder Foundation in Deauville instead :)

Cheeks
Liberally apply NARS’ Powder Blush in Orgasm, and use Canmake’s Highlighter for my high points.

Eyes
Prime the eyes with NARS’ Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base (this stuff is amazing!). Then use my 88 Coastal Scents Ultra-Shimmer Palette, apply a light blue all over the lid and crease. Use a medium blue just on and above the crease and under your lower lash line, then a dark blue directly on your outer corner. Use MAC’s Eyeshadow in White Frost for the inner corner of your eyes and balls on your eyelids.

Line your upper lash line with MAC’s Fluidline in Blacktrack, and the waterline with MAC’s Eye Kohl in Fascinating. I didn’t bother apply mascara since I knew my false lashes would be so overwhelmingly thick. Apply false lashes!

Fill in brows with NYX’s Eye / Eyebrow Pencil in Medium Brown.

Lips
Apply Maybelline’s Color Sensational Lipstick in Pink Peony and gloss over with NYX’s Gloss in Sparkle.
