Book of Fables: Chapter 60 – Funky Disco

June 10th, 2011 § 27 comments § permalink

Celina Fables in Fashion Book of Fables

Time for a little colour after the last couple of colour-less chapters! This is my second attempt at a disco look, after my first less than successful attempt! I wanted to do a bit of a twist, and decided to extend the design into my hair, which would have looked a ton better if my hair colour was lighter!

Apologises with some of the cutting of the video, a couple of very minor steps were cut out for the sake of trying to keep the video to 5 minutes.

Hope you enjoy, and as always if you have any questions or future requests, feel free to let me know~ :)

Book of Fables: Chapter 59 – Alone

June 3rd, 2011 § 42 comments § permalink

Celina Fables in Fashion Book of Fables

There have been days in my life when you truly do feel alone. It can be for any number of reasons, but like most people, I’ve experienced loss in my life, and it has made me question my own mortality (it was actually one of the driving factors towards starting this blog) and it makes you realise what is truly important at the end of the day.

Videos have become a way to really express the types of emotions I go through, and this video is reflective of those tougher times.

I found a very similar look online, so I take no credit behind the creativity. It’s been a concept I’ve wanted to try for ages, the initial plan was to simply powder over / airbrush actual lace on my face, but I wanted it to be a bigger challenge. I wanted to push my skills, whilst not perfect I think I was able to convey the message relatively well :)

I hope you enjoy the look and video as much as I did making it :)

NYX Nude on Nude Long Palette

Many months ago I reviewed NYX’s Nude on Nude Natural Look palette, a palette I loved so much that I even purchased a second to win in my first giveaway~ Then a few weeks ago NYX released a new version of the Nude on Nude palette, only with a much larger range of colours (and naturally bigger palette).

NYX Nude on Nude Long Palette

I have to admit that I’m a huge fan of NYX, and I am also a huge fan of this palette. The thing I love about these powders is that they are perfect for people who aren’t too confident with their makeup application, because when you dip your brush into these powders they don’t give you an insane amount of product, which some extremely pigmented shadows can.

NYX Nude on Nude Long Palette

I took of photo of the eye shadows from the NYX palette up against the Urban Decay Naked palette to give a clearer comparison, it’s not an exact dupe, but I honestly think you can achieve very similar results.

NYX Nude on Nude Long Palette

The eye shadow range is pretty impressive, it not only covers most of the Urban Decay Naked palette bases, but also caters towards those inclined to silvers and golds. I really like that it has a matte white and an almost matte black, two essential shades that everyone can use.

The lip palette to me was an interesting bonus, you get a decent range of pinks and reds, but if you’re looking for nudes, browns or really deep reds, then this palette won’t have it. Generally I found the colours pretty pigmented, obviously the darker shades come across more pigmented, but I wouldn’t see this as a replacement for good quality lipsticks, like MAC etc who really do give a solid pop of colour.

If you’re looking for a cheaper alternative to the Urban Decay Naked Palette, I’d be inclined to say this is a good dupe. The shades may not be exactly the same, but generally you’ll achieve the same results, not to mention with an array of different lip colours to boot! The only reason I knocked off half a star (and I was very indecisive over this) was because the palette itself doesn’t feel the sturdiest. I’d be okay throwing this in my bag, but I’d feel better about throwing my Urban Decay Naked palette in instead as I feel that could stand up to a beating better than this.

Book of Fables: Chapter 56 – Simple Dreams

Book of Fables Lookbook Look Book Celina

A simple look, for a big dream, to make videos~ Today I’ve created my first video tutorial, the first of many I’m hoping. I think moving on to a video medium was only a natural extension of my growth on this blog. When I first started blogging for beauty, I was terribly shy, and so would take baby steps. Expressing myself through words, then photos, then more “outrageous” photos and finally video.

Book of Fables Lookbook Look Book Celina

This is an amazing learning process, there are many things I want to change and improve on with my video, and I have a gazillion ideas I’ve been bouncing off my friends. I’m hoping with time I will be able to create for you some entertaining yet educational videos :) Special thanks to Klaire de lys is who is in my opinion one of the most talented makeup artists I’ve ever met on youtube! Her support is amazing and I can only hope to be 1/10 as talented as she.

If you would still like to see the tutorials written out, please let me know below~ I don’t mind writing them up if anyone finds them useful~ Enjoy!

Book of Fables: Chapter 55 – Diamond in the Rough

Book of Fables: Chapter 55 - Diamond in the Rough

Even days after shooting this look I’m still finding bits of glitter everywhere! It’s like sand, others who’ve used glitter in looks will understand my pain. Still, I’ve been wanting to do something like this look for the longest time, I think it could have used a bit more work (fix the hair, more glitter on the jawline), but it isn’t too bad for a first try. I wanted to illustrate the idea of diamond trickling down the side of my face.

I made the silver ball myself, one of my props :) Unfortunately the glue I used ate away at the gems so it isn’t as shiny as I had originally hoped :( It started as a foam ball which I covered in foil and then glued about 4 packs worth of gems on :/ Tres expensive, but totally worth it for Book of Fables :) Enjoy!

Face
Prime, apply foundation, concealer and powder to set. It’s always important to contour the face before you apply any additional detail, to get a solid base. So start by applying bronzer to the temples, hollows of the cheeks and jawline. Apply blush to your cheek bones, then take a highlighter to the high points of your face.

Eyes
Prime your lids and apply a white eyeliner to the inner corner of your eyes and brown bone. Then apply a light tanned eye shadow powder all over the lid up to the brow bone, take a medium taupe and apply to your crease. Finally take a dark silver shade and apply to the outer corner of your eyes, then take a shimmery white powder to the inner corner of your eyes and brow bone (over the areas you applied the white eyeliner).

Book of Fables: Chapter 55 - Diamond in the Rough

Line your upper lash line with a black liquid liner, then your waterline with a black eyeliner pencil. Curl your lashes and apply mascara to your top and bottom lashes.

The fun part! Any areas you want the place silver glitter that is not your eye area, spray Fix+ then dab on the silver glitter. For the eye area, take a glitter gel made for eyes and apply, then dab the silver glitter over it. Take some iridescent glitter and place it over the silver on any of your high points. Dab small amounts of eye lash glue then place the gems over.

Lips
Line and fill in your lips with a lip pencil, then coat your lips with a mauve rose lip colour. Then apply a shimmery beige lip colour to the center of your lips.

NYX Eye/Eyebrow Pencil

  • Easy to sharpen
  • Works on upper and lower lash line
  • Great for brows

Cons:

  • Too much pull on eyelids
  • Hard to get desired pigmentation on eyelids
  • Requires touch up throughout the day
  • Doesn’t work well on water line

Price: $2.50US

NYX Eye/Eyebrow Pencil

I’m pretty torn about this review because I really do love NYX products, and I actually do like these pencils, but not for their intended use.

These NYX Eye/Eyebrow pencils are designed to either fill in brows or act as an eyeliner, and I just can’t use them as an eyeliner. I can’t achieve the desired pigmentation and they keep pulling on my eyelids which can be painful and is bad for long-term use.

NYX Eye/Eyebrow Pencil

However on my brows, they work great, but they also work amazingly well when I’m trying to draw out designs on my face for different intricate looks. In other words, these pencils work best on a harder surface. Such as cheek bones, foreheads etc. They can work better on softer areas such as eye lids if you warm them up first, but given the huge range of fantastic naturally softer eyeliner pencils out there already, you shouldn’t need to be wasting your time warming these up.

NYX Eye/Eyebrow Pencil

So take or leave these liners, I know I have an crazy number of them, and that’s exactly because my makeup for Fables tends to be very outlandish and creative, so it’s normal for me to be drawing pink hearts on my cheek bones, however this isn’t the case for most people, and if you are looking for a good eyeliner pencil, move on.

But if you’re in the market for a brow pencil, check these out!

Book of Fables: Chapter 54 – Bohemian Nights

Celina Book of Fables - Bohemian Nights

A couple of weeks ago I went out to The Meat & Wine Co for dinner (fantastic food btw :9) and was inspired to do a bohemian look when I saw their beaded curtains with the orange night lights filtering through. So I went home, pulled out all the beads I had in storage and created my own “beaded curtains”, and there you have it!

Special thanks to Toby for taking the photos for me, I was holding reflectors in both hands during the entire shoot, and it took a bit of time to figure out how to set up the background, lights etc! It was both frustrating and rewarding <3

Hope you enjoy the look, I'm really enjoying stepping up the Book of Fables to a new level and am already hard at work creating a bunch of props for future shoots, but please don't expect them for every chapter! I work both a full-time and part-time job so I don't always have the time :(

OH! And before I forget, today is the last day to enter Fables in Fashion’s First Giveaway! Finishes at 5pm, Melbourne, Australia time! So be sure to enter if you would like to win some cool prizes, I’ll be throwing in a few other samples for the winner :)

Face
Prime, apply foundation, concealer and powder to set. I wanted my skin to appear more “warm” and glowy, so I applied a bronzer to my temples and jawline, applied blush to my cheek bones and a highlighter to the cheeks, bridge of my nose and forehead.

Eyes
Prime your lids, then take a light tan shadow and apply all over the lid, up to the brow bone, inner 1/3 of the lower lash line and inner corner of the eye. Take a medium brown and apply directly on to the eyelids, pat down the colour to intensify it and only blend out the edge closest to the crease.

Celina Book of Fables - Bohemian Nights

Take a deep brown and apply to the 2/3 outer parts of the crease and the outer corner. Blend up towards your brow bone and wing it out. Take a brown eyeliner and line your upper lash line and follow the shape of your winged eyeshadow. Next take a black eye liner and line your water line.

Take a teal coloured eye liner and apply directly on to the lower lash line, really pack on the colour, you can set it with a teal eye shadow powder if you lack lower lashes to help keep the colour in place (I should have done this!)

Fill in and extend your brows with the deep brown eye shadow. Curl your lashes and apply black mascara.

Lips
Line and fill in your lips with a muted pink lip liner and coat with an electric pink / red lipstick.
