Walking the Distance – Comfortable Stylish Shoes for Work

July 21st, 2010 § 11 comments

Due to the nature of my job, I rarely work in the same office for more than a few months. This means as part of my daily commute, there could be a lot to very little walking involved.

As a shoe lover, I would never throw on a pair of runners during my commute. It’s just not something I could let myself do (tho I have no issue with those who do). Luckily over the years I’ve learnt what stylish shoes are good for walk in and what isn’t. I’ll have to warn you that the shoes below are the ones I use on an everyday basis for work, so they are mostly black and grays (I don’t work in a very colourful / creative place hehe) and pretty worn out by now.

Flats
No surprise here, but the most important thing to look out for is quality. The last thing you want is to buy a cheap pair with sole as thick as paper. Your feet will be screaming in pain, especially if your commute is mainly concrete.

One way to counter this however is to use insoles. Make sure they are sturdy, thick and comfortable. Also considering wearing stockings / socks in the winter for added comfort and warmth.

Heels
Yes, I went there! I do wear heels when I have a lot of walking to do, there are just certain factors to look out for.

Kitten Heels
There are shoes with heels about 1 inch high, for most people the heels are so small they hardly notice them.

Mary Janes
These are absolutely my all time favourite shoes to wear. They look elegant and I can (and have) chased after trains and buses with these without any problems. (Just make sure not to attempt this until you are a very confident heels wearer, else you could end up with a broken ankle).

The reason these shoes tend to be very comfortable is thanks to the additional strap near the ankle. This strap basically ties the shoe to your foot, preventing it from accidentally slipping off. This also removed the additional strain on your calves that most people will experience when wearing traditional pumps.

Boots
Whether they have heels or not, I could walk a mile and then some in boots. Like the Mary Janes, since it covers your entire foot, there is no need to strain your calf muscles from “holding” on to the shoes. And so you are feel to walk/run/dance as long as you like without much, if any discomfort. A great tip is to wear socks, keep you warm in the winter and provide so much added comfort.
